The 140 character limit is one unique feature that Twitter has been known for and it doesn't look like Twitter is going to make any changes to that anytime soon.
Although Twitter has actually made some changes to it's policy that will allow users to post longer tweets, you will still be limited to the 140 character limit. Now Twitter will no longer count the username towards the 140 charcaters whenever you reply a tweet.
Also, recipient's user name will now appear above the tweet instead of being inside it. And clicking on "Replying to..." gives the Twitter user a way to control who is part of a Twitter chat.
According to an official message by Twitter,
"The updates we’re making today are based on feedback from all of you as well as research and experimentation. In our tests of this new experience, we found that people engage more with conversations on Twitter."-Twitter
The update is now available for all platforms. While Android and iOS users can download from their various app stores, desktop users can get the update from twitter's official website.
